Step 1 - understand the problem

Unicorn Jubilee is a fantasy-themed book and entertainment brand. They specialize in fun products that feature mythical animals such as unicorns and dragons. They sell many different products such as coloring books, stickers, keychains and magnets.

The brand owner wanted a video advertisement that would show potential buyers a “tour” of their coloring books. In other words, the customer should get a preview of the quality of the art within the book while also getting a call to action to color in, and therefore buy the book.

Step 2 - Research

I decided that the best way to make this video ad was to use Adobe After Effects. My thoughts were to make the pages of a coloring book open up and display some of the Unicorn Coloring Book’s pages. The viewer would get to see an example of the art inside as well as a call to action by seeing the line art being colored in.

While I am very familiar with the program, I sometimes need to find references from other experts in order to create specific animation such as the one I wanted to do.

After doing some research, I found a tutorial by a YouTuber named Manuel Does Motion. He provided a technique that creates the effect of a book being opened and the pages turning. I decided to reference this tutorial in the video ad. You can find Manuel’s tutorial here.

Step 3 - Design

After following the tutorial, I simply placed the unicorn pages inside of the template and modified the animation to suit the purposes of the ad. I also made sure that the colors and typography reflected the branding and the fantasy theme of Unicorn Jubilee. The final result is a video ad that is quick, informative and presents a call to action from the customer.
